What is MPFL Reconstruction?

Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) Reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to stabilise the kneecap (patella) following recurrent dislocations or subluxations. The MPFL is a key ligament that connects the inner side of the kneecap to the thigh bone (femur), preventing the patella from slipping sideways out of its groove. When the MPFL is torn or stretched – often due to trauma or a previous dislocation – the patella can become unstable, leading to repeated episodes, pain, and loss of function. Reconstruction restores this critical ligament to help keep the kneecap aligned during movement.
