What is Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a procedure in which a damaged or worn-out knee joint is replaced with an artificial implant. It is one of the most successful and commonly performed orthopaedic surgeries worldwide, designed to relieve chronic pain and improve mobility. This procedure is often recommended for patients with advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic joint damage that no longer responds to conservative treatments like medication, physiotherapy, or lifestyle changes.

Types of Knee Replacement

Depending on your specific condition and lifestyle, your surgeon may recommend one of the following:

1. Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

  • The most common form of surgery.
  • Damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the entire knee joint and replaced with a metal and plastic prosthesis.

2. Partial Knee Replacement

  • Only the damaged portion of the knee is replaced.
  • Suitable for patients with damage limited to one compartment of the knee.
  • Involves smaller incisions and typically allows for quicker recovery.

3. Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement

  • Advanced technology is used to assist the surgeon with precision planning and implant placement.
  • Enhances alignment accuracy and can lead to better long-term outcomes.
